Appointment of Resident Ambassador

The Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Bahamas has announced the appointment of Ms. Elma Campbell as the first resident Bahamas Ambassador to China. In making the announcement of the appointment the Prime Minister indicated that it was the government's intention of to staff and support the Mission in Beijing so as to ensure that The Bahamas receives the maximum benefit from its representation in the most populous country in the world with one of the most rapidly expanding global economies.

 
 
Senator the Hon. Elma "Ellie" Campbell has served as the Minister of State for Immigration in the Ministry of National Security since May 07, 2007 following the 2007 general election.
 
 
 
 
Ms. Campbell was born to the late Percy and Beryl Campbell in Nassau on March 22, 1955. Upon completing St Anne's High School, Fox Hill and St. Elphin's, England she attended the University of Grenoble, France, where she obtained a degree in Modern Language and Linguistics in 1975. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Education from the University of Miami.
 
 
 
 
Ms. Campbell is a trained teacher and a member of The Bahamas Bar. She taught at the Government High School, C.C. Sweeting Senior High School, St Anne's High School and the Boys Industrial School. She articled as a law clerk at the Chambers of Higgs and Johnson, Nassau and has headed her own law firm since 1985. Ms. Campbell has also served as a stipendiary and circuit magistrate and as a part-time lecturer in banking law at the College of The Bahamas (COB).
 
 
 
 
She was a founding member of the Holy Cross Anglican Church and served as a member of the vestry of Epiphany Anglican Church.
 
 
 
 
She has been in The Bahamas Union of Teachers, The Bahamas Red Cross, St. John's Parent Teachers Association and The Bahamas Swim Federation. She organized "Legal Line," a radio programme dedicated to discussion of the Law.
 
 
 
 
She is a divorcee and is the mother of two children.
 
 
 
 
Her hobbies include cooking, reading, sewing and swimming. She speaks French fluently.
